🚨 IN YOUR TANK
You have 2 susceptible animal(s): 🐚 Turbo Snail, 🦀 Blue Leg Hermit Crab.
Actually a photosynthetic bacteria, not true algae. Forms slimy sheets that smother corals and substrate. Often red, purple, or dark brown. Produces toxins that can stress tank inhabitants. A tank hygiene problem more than an infection.
🔍 IDENTIFICATION
Slimy, bubbly mats of red, maroon, purple or dark brown covering sand and rock. Has a distinctive musty smell. Bubbles of oxygen get trapped under the mat. Pulls away in sheets.
🛡 PREVENTION
✓Ensure all areas of tank have adequate flow — no dead spots
✓Keep phosphate below 0.1 ppm
✓Replace T5/metal halide bulbs on schedule (every 12 months) — old bulbs shift spectrum toward cyano-friendly wavelengths
✓Don't overfeed
